Daily reading for January 18 from “As If I Was In Your Office…”

Submit and Surrender - “To submit and surrender to God’s love and other people’s love for us.” Fr. Paul – March 12, 2008.

As alcoholics we hate to submit to God’s or other’s will because of our egos, our hates and resentments, self-righteousness, and our independence. We cannot stand on our own two feet. We rebelled against it. It is difficult for the alcoholic to accept the love of God, to submit and surrender to it. We do not believe it, so we push it and others away. We have our walls up and do not trust them. We want to run our own lives because we think that we know better. We take away our parents’ freedom to love and care for us, and God’s freedom as a Father who cares for us, loves us, and gives us the strength, understanding and courage that we all need. As alcoholics we could not submit and surrender to God’s love. This is what we need more than anything else because of our disease of alcoholism.

My commitment today is to submit and surrender to the love of God through others.

Not only did the people at Brentwood change my son, but they changed me as a mother. It allowed me to develop an amazing relationship with my son. When we found Brentwood, I was as much in need of help as my son was. I could not have done this journey without help. Without Brentwood’s help!

By coming to Family Support meetings with an open heart, I found a support system like no others. Brentwood staff have continued to work with my son in his Recovery while I worked my own program. This has allowed us to celebrate and grow in recovery as a family. I will be forever grateful to Brentwood!
